Mary Asselstine, a long-time community advocate, is planning to be the next full time King Township Councillor for Ward 4. One of the most recognisable people walking down Main Street, Mary is a fixture in Schomberg, well known for her 30 years of volunteer work. She is a founding member of the Dufferin Marsh Nature Connection and the Schomberg Community Farm. You have probably seen Mary helping with events and activities like the Schomberg Community Skate and A Main Street Christmas.
With development pressures within and around King Township Mary seeks to continue her work on behalf of the community to build a vision for our future that meets the needs of the community first. A key aspect of her platform is to support a better dialogue within the Township, so that residents can be informed about the activities and plans for our community, and the Township can be more responsive to the needs of Ward 4.
She also wants to engage community members more fully in planning decisions. Mary will use her background in planning, together with active discussions with community members, to support good decisions and a collaborative vision for the future of our villages and rural areas. Mary is currently canvassing, talking to people about what they value in our community and what they want for the future.
In seeking to help develop “complete communities”, places where residents can work, live and play, she will work to support the growth of local businesses, and the enhancement of communication services to promote working from home. In addition, she will encourage the transition to a range of housing and transportation choices.
Finally, Mary promises to help preserve the character of what we love about Ward 4: the heritage character of our villages; the wide open rural landscapes; the greenspaces; and the close supportive neighbourhoods.
Ward 4 covers from 10th concession on the west to Highway 400, and from Highway 9 south to 18th sideroad. The municipal elections for King Township will be held on October 22nd. The King Township provides more information on the election. Mary is looking forward to talking to all the residents of Ward 4 in the coming weeks and working together to build a vision for our future together. To learn more about Mary and details of her platform visit her website at www.MaryAsselstine.ca.
